The Basilica of St James stands high above Old Town. This Baroque church has as much of a remarkable history as it does architecture. Inside the church, holds the most beautiful Baroque tomb in Bohemia of Count Vratislav of Mitrovice. Today the purpose of the church is to provide many concerts and recitals.
The history of Basilica of St James begins between the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built on the sight of an earlier church destroyed by fire in the 13th century. The name of the Basilica of St. James comes from the paintings on the high alter where it depicts scenes of the Martyrdom of St. James. Also within the church, on the left side of the main door, a mummified forearm of a thief who tried to steal the jewels from the statue of the Virgin. As the legend says, the Virgin herself grabbed the arm so tightly that it had to be amputated.
