The name of Maltese Square comes from the Knights of Malta. In 1169 these knights established a monastery near the Church of Our Lady Below the Chain.
Over the course of a few centuries the Maltese Square has had quite a bit of political focus. However, since 1989 the square has remained peaceful. The Maltese Square today holds buildings that houses two embassies as well as the John Lennon Wall.
